Zamboanga City to Cotabato City bus guide

Zamboanga City to Cotabato City runs 320 kilometers along the base of the Zamboanga peninsula and around the top of Illana Bay. Mindanao Star and Rural Transit both work it in air-conditioned regular service, at fares ten pesos apart.

Route overview and terminal information

  • Average travel time: 10 to 14 hours. The corridor is long on hours rather than kilometers - the road, not the distance, sets the pace.
  • Fares: P1,050.00 on Mindanao Star and P1,060.00 on Rural Transit. Effectively the same ticket.
  • Bus type: Air-conditioned regular service from both operators. No non-stop tier.

The two directions are scheduled differently

This is the part worth knowing before you plan. The eastbound and westbound timetables are not mirrors of each other:

  • Zamboanga to Cotabato: Mindanao Star fields nine departures, from 2:00 AM through the afternoon and evening to a last trip at 11:15 PM. Rural Transit runs five: 4:40 AM, then 4:30 PM, 6:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 10:10 PM. Between the two, most of the service out of Zamboanga is overnight.
  • Cotabato to Zamboanga: The operators split the day. Rural Transit runs the mornings - 4:00 AM, 6:00 AM, then 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Mindanao Star runs the evenings, at 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 8:00 PM.

So a daytime departure from Cotabato means looking for Rural Transit, and an evening one means Mindanao Star. Going the other way, an overnight trip is the norm rather than the exception.

Where the bus stops

Eight towns and cities between the endpoints, in the same order both ways:

  • Zamboanga Sibugay: Ipil, Imelda, and Buug along the peninsula.
  • Zamboanga del Sur: Pagadian City and Tukuran. Pagadian is the largest intermediate stop and a hub in its own right.
  • Lanao del Norte and Maguindanao: Sultan Naga Dimaporo, then Malabang and Parang on the approach to Cotabato City.

Practical travel tips

  • Plan for a night on the bus: Most Zamboanga departures are evening trips on a 10 to 14 hour run. Bring what you need for an overnight journey.
  • Match the operator to the time of day: Out of Cotabato the two operators cover different halves of the day, so which company you want depends on when you are travelling.
  • Pagadian is a genuine alternative: If the through service does not suit, Pagadian City is the natural break point and has its own connections in both directions.
  • Carry a valid ID: The route crosses several provincial boundaries and passes routine highway checkpoints along the way.

Travel advice

Read the direction before the timetable. Out of Zamboanga the bulk of the departures are evening trips that run through the night; out of Cotabato, Rural Transit works the morning and Mindanao Star the evening. Ten to fourteen hours for 320 kilometers is not a misprint - it is the pace of the peninsula road, and the range is wide because conditions vary.
