Surigao City to Butuan City bus guide

Surigao City to Butuan City covers 150 kilometers of the Pan-Philippine Highway through Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte. Bachelor Express is the only operator on the corridor and fields air-conditioned regular service in both directions.

Route overview and terminal information

Trips run between the Surigao City Bus Terminal and the Butuan City Terminal. Surigao is the mainland end of the ferry crossing from Liloan in Southern Leyte, which lands at Lipata Port just outside the city, so a large share of the passengers on this corridor started the day in the Visayas.

  • Average travel time: 3 to 4 hours, depending on how many of the municipal stops the bus works.
  • Fares: P305.00 for the air-conditioned ticket.
  • Departures: From roughly 3:00 AM to 11:00 PM in both directions, but on two different timetables - see below.

The timetable changes with the day

This is the detail that catches people out. Bachelor Express does not run one schedule seven days a week on this corridor. It runs two:

  • Friday to Monday: The heavier timetable - 47 departures, with gaps as short as 15 minutes through the middle of the day.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: A lighter timetable of 42 departures, spaced closer to 20 minutes apart in the same window.

Between them the two sets cover all seven days, so there is no day without service. What changes is the frequency, and which specific times exist.

Where the bus stops

Southbound from Surigao the sequence runs Mainit, Alegria, Kitcharao, Jabonga, Santiago, Cabadbaran City, and Remedios T. Romualdez before Butuan. Northbound it is the same list reversed.

  • Cabadbaran City: The largest intermediate stop and the capital of Agusan del Norte.
  • Mainit and Alegria: The Surigao del Norte towns along Lake Mainit, the fourth-largest lake in the country.

Practical travel tips

  • Confirm midweek departures at the terminal: The Tuesday-to-Thursday timetable is the lighter of the two. Do not assume a weekend departure time will be running.
  • Butuan is a transfer, not usually an end: The Butuan City Terminal connects onward to Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Tandag, and Bislig. Build the connection into your plan rather than treating Butuan as the arrival.
  • Coming off the ferry: Lipata Port is outside Surigao City proper. Allow time to reach the bus terminal rather than assuming the ferry lands beside it.
  • Carry a valid ID: The corridor crosses a provincial boundary and passes routine highway checkpoints. Keep an ID within reach rather than packed.

Travel advice

Check the day before the hour. Bachelor Express keeps two separate timetables on this corridor, one for Friday through Monday and a lighter one for Tuesday through Thursday, so a departure a friend used at the weekend may not exist midweek. Buses run from before dawn until late evening either way, and Butuan is the transfer point for Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and the Surigao del Sur coast.
